One year older, but wiser....??

To celebrate my 74th birthday I ordered a Anycubic Chiron printer.
400x400x450mm build volume.
The build volume should be very nice for RhB two-axle cars and similar items.

Yes, the home office needed to be re-vamped to gain the space.

I'm sure you're at least a little wiser as well...

That's a HUGE printer...do you have to use a different filament that maybe cools slower, given the larger travel distance that the print head must cover? It should give you a lot more flexibility for large scale items, that's for sure!

Yes Sir, it is a bit larger.





And it took a bit of juggling to get the required space.
On the wiser?? Hmmm
This one has both power fail recovery and "sort of" automatic leveling, along with a USB link complete with cable. Also an easy to navigate touch screen on which one can even bring up the G-code etc. etc. But I'll use the SD cards to feed the beast, don't need any additional stuff connected to the 'puter.

Gets delivered with the base and the Gantry as separate assemblies, nicely packed and very easy to set up.
Was there a fly in the ointment? Yes, had to dismantle the X-axis slide to check if the rollers and the bearings were OK? Looks like they over tightened the excentre (to eliminate any play) and it acted like there was a flat spot on the "wheels".

Didn't get to the test print yesterday, but I manually leveled the build plate. So today could be the day, except we're going skiing, FIRST.

On that build volume 400x400x450; that covers the range of the two axle RhB rolling stock. Perfect for my nostalgic tendencies.

10 days on I finally get around to doing the test print to check the leveling.

Oh dear, it's running, running and running some more ..... after 24 minutes it shows 10% completion.

Meanwhile i'm running the first set of females from Printle. That's another one of the outfits who travels with a scanner and uploads the STL files to Thingiverse.
One can also get their printed goodies on Shapeways.
The only drawback with their files ..... all figures have a 4mm base and since they offer them in groups of four or more figures connected by the base it's a bit of a nuisance.
Perhaps Keith's smart son; or someone on here;
knows a way to edit the bases out of the way or cut them down to 0.5mm thickness.
The other thing I "discovered" using some of the other good figures (not in joined groups!), the files are so large that importing them as a STL to get rid of the base is a major undertaking. A) the import takes seemingly "forever" B) just moving the object e.g. in SU is as slow as molasses.

OK now it shows 00:41; 23% but it looks just about blooming perfect to my eye.

If you are using Cura and they are on a 4mm base, use the "Move" menu (on the left of the screen) and drop them to -3.5mm on the Z axis which will print leaving you with the 0.5 required.

That never even entered my mind. Despite having a bunch of large figures way up in sky and having to bring them down to "0", just never figured one could go to negative. Thanks a million!

Yep, works like a charm!
Leave just enough to have a slightly heavier base layer. Now, if the female ankles on those models would be a bit sturdier !?
